Diabetes
history of innovation...a vision of a cure
UCSF’s commitment to diabetes research has resulted in
a rich history of breakthroughs that have improved diabetes treatment
and saved countless lives.
UCSF scientists were the first to isolate and then clone the
gene for human insulin, paving the way for mass-produced human
insulin and revolutionizing diabetes therapy. Today, researchers
are working to cultivate insulin-producing islet cells for transplantation
in patients and develop drugs to prevent the rejection of islet
cell transplants.
World leaders in metabolism, nutrition, endocrinology, molecular
and cellular biology and human genetics, the Center’s investigators
are breaking down traditional barriers between scientific disciplines
to produce innovative therapies and, ultimately, a cure for diabetes.
Gifts to this priority will enable the Diabetes Center to construct
state-of-the-art laboratories, recruit and retain world-class
scientists, address the challenges of Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes
and lead the way to a new era in diabetes care.
