Basic Science
the science behind the science
Discoveries by geneticists, neuroscientists, immunologists and
other basic scientists often become the foundation for the most
important breakthroughs. These investigators examine the micro
(the cellular and molecular level of life) to better understand
the macro (diseases and disorders).
The uniquely collaborative research environment at UCSF makes
it an ideal venue to explore health at its most fundamental level
and translate discoveries into effective therapies and prevention
strategies. Basic science discoveries at UCSF have led to breakthroughs
that changed the way medical science views cancer, neurodegenerative
disease, AIDS and other ailments. Today, University investigators
stand on the verge of remarkable new discoveries that may revolutionize
the treatment of diabetes and addiction, unlock the mysteries
of memory and aging and unleash the therapeutic potential of stem
cells.
To encourage gifts to basic science research, the Sandler Family
Supporting Foundation will match unrestricted, current-use contributions
dollar-for-dollar. Gifts to this priority will help launch promising
and innovative research initiatives, nurture talented young scientists,
recruit and retain an exceptional faculty and modernize laboratories.
