AIDS
on a mission
Since the AIDS pandemic hit in the 1980s, the disease has taken
a terrible toll of over 20 million lives, and the number continues
to soar. UCSF played a critical role in the initial quest to understand
and treat the disease, and the University remains at the forefront
of AIDS research today.
With over 50 research programs and laboratories, UCSF’s
AIDS Research Institute (ARI) is the largest AIDS research entity
in the world after the National Institutes of Health. More than
400 ARI investigators work all over the globe, conducting research
that will improve patient care and shape public policy.
The ARI’s innovative research strategies often fall outside
the narrow realm of government funding, making private support
crucial to its efforts. Gifts to support research into the basic
science of HIV and AIDS can be directed to the Breakthrough Fund.
Gifts to the Center for AIDS Prevention Studies will support HIV
prevention research. Support for the AIDS Policy Research Center
will fund policy development efforts.
