Neurological Diseases

unlocking the mysteries of the brain

Neurologic conditions require highly specialized care, and UCSF is well equipped to meet that challenge. The UCSF Department of Neurology is a leading academic center dedicated to excellence in patient care, and its clinical programs are headed by internationally recognized leaders in their fields.

The priorities below are specifically targeted to maintain and enhance the University’s ability to offer the very best in treatment for neurologic disorders:

Brain Tumor Research Center
UCSF’s Brain Tumor Research Center (BTRC) is the largest brain tumor treatment program in the nation and one of the few centers in the world offering state-of-the-art research and treatment for brain tumors afflicting both children and adults. BTRC clinicians offer an integrated array of clinical programs covering a full range of neurological surgery specialty services, including treatment planning, surgery, auxiliary therapies and rehabilitation. Private support is needed to ensure that the BTRC continues its leadership in advancing the care and treatment of brain tumors.

To support the BTRC, contact the UCSF Development Office at 415/476-6922 or mail@support.ucsf.edu.

Institute for Neurodegenerative Diseases
The Institute for Neurodegenerative Diseases (IND) unites top investigators from diverse areas of expertise to focus on the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases that are increasingly problematic for an aging society. The Institute is directed by Stanley Prusiner, MD, who in 1997 was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine for his discovery of the prion, a new kind of pathogen now known to be responsible for a variety of neurodegenerative ailments. Four specialized Centers, which offer the very best in care as they seek to improve treatment options, are affiliated with the IND:

  • ALS Research and Patient Care Center
  • Memory and Aging Center
  • Multiple Sclerosis Center
  • Parkinson’s Disease Clinic and Research Center

Gifts to this priority will help advance the understanding and treatment of neurodegenerative diseases by funding faculty recruitment and retention, new technologies and other necessary resources.

To support the IND, contact the UCSF Development Office at 415/476-6922 or mail@support.ucsf.edu.
