UCSF Neurocritical Care and Vascular Neurology Fellowships

UCSF offers two fellowship opportunities to board eligible neurologists who wish further training in either vascular neurology or neurocritical care.

Our Neurocritical Care fellowship program is a two-year clinical training program designed to train board eligible neurologists in neurocritical care. Fellows spend one year divided between the neurocritical care units at Moffitt hospital (chiefly neurovascular patients) and San Francisco General Hospital neurotrauma ICU. In the other year of training, fellows train in the medical critical care units and spend two months in anesthesia training. UCSF neurocritical care fellows are board eligible for neurocritical care subspecialty certification through UCNS. Internal medicine board certified or board eligible applicants are eligible to take the critical care medicine boards as well upon completion of our program. The UCSF training program is among the most rigorous in the United States. We feel that Neurointensivists should be well trained, competent intensivists who regard the brain as the focus of resuscitation. We also feel that neurocritical care units staffed by well trained neurointensivists offer the best care to patients with neurological illness.

To apply for the fellowship, the applicant must be eligible for and possess a California State Medical License on the start date of the fellowship (July 1). Because of this requirement, applicants who have attended a non–U.S. medical school must have completed at least one year in a USGME-approved residency training program in the United States.

The Vascular Neurology fellowship is a 1-2 year program seeking to train leaders in the fields of stroke neurology and clinical research. The program is currently applying for ACGME accreditation in Vascular Neurology.

One year provides the necessary rotations in vascular neurology, neuroradiology and neurorehabilitation medicine required for Vascular Neurology board eligibility. Clinical rotations include outpatient stroke clinic, inpatient stroke care, rehabilitation medicine and electives. Fellows obtain extensive experience in the management of acute ischemic stroke with intravenous thrombolytics and endovascular methods, including intra-arterial thrombolysis and thrombectomy. Fellows administer and interpret transcranial Doppler testing for vasospasm and learn to interpret duplex ultrasonography of the carotid. Additionally, fellows obtain extensive experience in interpreting neuroimaging including MRI, CT angiography, CT perfusion, and conventional angiography.

We strongly encourage applicants who wish to pursue a career in clinical research to apply for an additional year of training in clinical research methodology. This additional year will offer didactic teaching in the basics of biostatistics, epidemiology, and study design. Each fellow will be matched with a research mentor and will carry out his/her own research project, with the expectation that all fellows will complete a first-authored manuscript. All of our clinician scientists and fellows are actively involved in clinical research. Please check our website for further information on current faculty research interests and projects.
