Printing
You need to set up an account before you can print. See Kim at S926 to open an account. She will give you a receipt and credit your account. You must log off from a workstation after you finish using the workstation. Otherwise, anyone can use your printing account to print. Remember that your printing account in the IRC is not the same one as in the Library. It costs five cents per black and white page and 25 cents per color page in the IRC.
Lab uses
The IRC was designed to be multiuse, i.e., lots of things can be going on at the same time. For example, a lecturer could be presenting to a class and other students could be doing individual work. Please do not be deterred by the presence of a class session at a time when you want to use the IRC.
General Lab Rules
Bring your own USB flash drive to save your work. Only those OmniPro systems in the back have floppy drives, CDRWs, and Zip drives. You can't save work on the hard drives of any IRC computers.
Absolutely no eating, drinking, or smoking in the IRC. If you are caught eating, drinking, or smoking in the IRC, your privilege to enter or use IRC facilities may be revoked. Any food you brought into the lab must be sealed or in a closed container, and put away.
When you signed the User Agreement, you agreed that
-
You may be required to change workstations or possibly leave the IRC during times of School of Pharmacy priority use,
including scheduled class sections, videoconferencing, etc.
-
You will not use the IRC as a social gathering place or a meeting room.
-
You will pay for the cost of all printing incurred by your login/password.
-
In using IRC equipment, you are asserting that you know how to use it for its intended purpose(s) in a manner that does
not inflict wear above normal wear. You understand that you can be held liable for the cost of repairing equipment, software,
files or systems damaged due to improper use.
-
Unless specifically approved, you will not enter the AV closet or the hub/server room (the doors at the front of the IRC on
either sides of the big screen).
Your privilege to enter or use IRC facilities may be revoked:
-
if you divulge your login/password to anyone other than IRC personnel, or do not immediately report that you have reason to believe someone has knowledge of your login or password.
- if you permit entry to persons who are not eligible to use the IRC. (brief guest entries for touring purposes are permissible.)
-
if you eat, drink or bring opened food or drink into the IRC.
-
if you use the IRC ISDN or long distance lines without receiving approval from the IRC director or designated personnel. However, IP videoconference doesn't require approval for use.
Priority
Some workstations have special hardware and/or software. When someone needs to use that special software, you will have to move to another workstation. Please be polite when asking someone to move to another workstation.
- Workstation #28 has Xerox DocuMate 152 Scanner, DreamWeaver, and Adobe products.
- Macintosh #32
-
Workstation #36 has HP Scanjet, DreamWeaver, and Adobe products.
Computer Security
Computer security at UCSF is taken seriously. The 1988 infestation of a computer "worm" into several UCSF computers, as well as hundreds of other computers throughout the U.S., made us acutely aware of the need for tight security. There are also constant attempts to 'break into' campus computers. For this reason the policy has been adopted that ABSOLUTELY NO USER WILL BE PERMITTED TO SHARE HIS/HER COMPUTER ACCOUNT WITH ANOTHER PERSON. Users found sharing their account with another individual will have their account deactivated and their IRC access privileges withdrawn immediately. Users found maliciously damaging or destroying another user's data or system programs, or using their account to illegally access another computer system will be referred to police for prosecution under section 502 of the California Penal Code.
Your account is your personal responsibility and you will be held liable for its misuse by another individual.
Passwords
Your account is no more secure than your password is. An initial password will be assigned to your account, but this should be changed as soon as possible to something only you know. Passwords should NOT be 1) common English words found in the dictionary, 2) someone's name, 3) your account name or car license number, etc. Choose a word you can easily remember (so you don't have to write it down), but use an unusual combination of lower/upper case characters or include punctuation or numbers in the word. Their presence will insure that someone cannot guess or stumble on your password.
You should also get in the habit of changing your password every six months or so. That way anyone who has discovered your password and is using your account will be cut off automatically.
Downloading/Uploading Applications
Due to legal concerns and the very real possibility of introducing and/or spreading computer viruses, you are not permitted to download or upload applications to any IRC input/output device without first receiving approval of IRC personnel. At no time are you to disable the computers virus protection software.
Your Conduct in the IRC
The IRC was designed for pharmacy students, faculty and selected staff and is available to you for the purpose of learning. All work you conduct therein must be reliant on the electronic facilities available. When that work is completed, we ask that you leave. Please: no meetings, no social gatherings and use of the facility as a room for studying for exams, etc except during Finals week.
At no time you are to make IRC possible for anyone who does not fall into the three categories listed above to use its facilities. (You may, of course, bring someone into the room briefly to demonstrate its facilities.) We ask that you always be alert to the fact that the IRC is a multipurpose room. If a videoconference is being conducted, or instruction is being presented, etc., we ask that you speak softly, change workstations if necessary, and do not interfere with the rooms audio/visual equipment. |
