The OPTIONS Project is a multi-study research program at UCSF. Our goal is to learn as much as possible about early HIV infection and to better understand how HIV is being transmitted now. OPTIONS is one of the largest studies of its kind in the world.

We offer studies for persons with recent HIV infection whether or not you start treatment. OPTIONS provides information that may help you decide whether treatment is right for you.

The OPTIONS Project will help you determine if you were recently infected. If you were recently infected and live in the San Francisco Bay area, the study offers:
  • Regular viral load measurements, T-cell counts, drug resistance typing and other state of the art tests
  • Consultations with doctors specializing in early HIV infection
  • On-going counseling
  • Confidential and supportive partner notification
The OPTIONS Project is designed to work with you and your doctor. If you don't have a doctor we have referrals. Study participation is voluntary, confidential, and at no cost to you.

You have OPTIONS.

OPTIONS: 415-502-8100.

Staff are available from 7.30 am till 3.30 pm to answer your calls. After hours you can leave a message and a counselor will call you back.

We have a dedicated team of doctors, nurses and counselors. We will help you determine if you were recently infected. If you test positive we will be there to support you and provide you with healthcare options.
