Varenicline
Varenicline, a drug approved as an aid for smoking cessation, has now been found to reduce drinking in animals, making it a promising candidate drug for treating alcohol dependence. The drug's development was inspired by structural elements from alkaloids found in the plant Laburnum anagyroides (cytisine) and in Papaver somniferum (morphine).
