The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) has named Peter Mandell, MD, the new chair of its Council on Advocacy, which plans and oversees the organization’s legislative, regulatory and health policy efforts. The 35,000-member AAOS, the world’s largest medical association of musculoskeletal specialists, announced the appointment on Feb. 27 at its annual meeting in Las Vegas. Mandell, an assistant clinical professor of orthopaedic surgery at UCSF, is the two-year-old council’s second chair, taking over from David Halsey, MD, of the University of Vermont. In accepting the position, which took effect immediately, Mandell said he would work to ensure that AAOS priorities were heard and addressed at the federal and state levels, “particularly on the issues of Medicare, Medicaid and comprehensive health care reform.” Last year, the Council on Advocacy helped members of Congress craft the Access to America’s Orthopaedic Services Act of 2008, a bill that aims to improve research, diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal diseases and conditions – the leading cause of disability in the United States. Mandell has long played an active role in the AAOS, and was a founding member and inaugural chair of the organization’s Committee on Professionalism. He has also served as chair of the Board of Councilors and as a member of the AAOS Political Action Committee and the Council on Health Policy and Practice. In addition to his involvement with AAOS, Mandell has served as past president of the California Orthopaedic Association and is the current chair of the group’s Workers’ Compensation Committee. Mandell has practiced orthopedic surgery in the San Francisco Bay Area for more than 33 years. He received his medical degree and completed his orthopedic surgery residency at the San Francisco Orthopaedic Residency Training Program. Photo/Newswise
