UCSF to Offer Third Year of Faculty Leadership Collaborative

The Chancellor's Council on Faculty Life (CCFL) is again sponsoring the UCSF Faculty Leadership Collaborative this academic year. The program is designed for UCSF faculty who want to build their personal and professional development skills, awareness and knowledge. The program will be available for up to 32 faculty members in 2008. The Faculty Leadership Collaborative was created in response to a campuswide survey that identified a need for more opportunities to support and advance faculty careers. Funded by CCFL, the collaborative will again be led by the Coro Center for Civic Leadership, a nationally recognized leadership training organization. The program requires a substantial commitment of time (up to 75 hours) over 10 sessions, and participants must commit to attending all of the sessions. Vice Provost Sally Marshall, PhD, invites faculty members at all stages of their careers to apply. "We encourage the participation of individuals who are or will play a role in defining the future of UCSF within their departments, and/or through their school, Academic Senate and campuswide activities," she says. "This program is a great opportunity for UCSF to develop and retain talented faculty." Most participants have expressed appreciation for opportunities offered by the collaborative, including the chance to form strong bonds with faculty from diverse schools, disciplines and ranks whom they otherwise would never have met, as well as the chance to reflect on their careers and future directions. Participants from previous sessions say that their leadership skills have improved and that they have gained a better understanding of UCSF's fourfold mission of education, research, patient care and public service. One participant said, "I gained personal awareness and insight. I now use my skills to better advantage, and know which skills need honing. I am moving up the leadership ladder at UCSF, and am comfortable with that progression. I feel like I can really be of service now."

Those who participated in the collaborative are, from back row, left to right, Lisa Kroon; Peter Loomer; Teri Melese; Laurence Baskin; Dominic Montagu; Susan Chang; Shelley Adler; Susan Kools; and in the front row, from left to right, Teri Liegler; Mignon Lee-Cheun Loh; Glenna Dowling; Elizabeth Ozer; Katherine Strelkoff; Linda Centore.

Since completing the program, prior participants have been offered significant leadership opportunities; some were appointed to the CCFL, and all were asked to provide feedback on the UCSF Strategic Plan, a blueprint to guide UCSF's growth and development over the next 20 years. In fact, the UCSF Strategic Plan specifically recommends ensuring that "professional development and career advancement opportunities are transparent and available to all" and that the University should "groom and promote the next generation of UCSF leadership." The strategic plan, unveiled in June, is posted here. For the first time, leadership training will be offered in both spring and fall. Applications and program information for the spring 2008 program are available here. The application deadline is Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2007. For additional information about the program, the application process or a list of the 63 past participants, please go here. Please note that applications for the fall session will be available at the Academic Affairs website in early winter.
