Nominations Sought for First Lifetime Achievement in Mentoring Award

The UCSF Faculty Mentoring Program is pleased to announce the first Lifetime Achievement in Mentoring Award. The award recognizes an outstanding senior faculty mentor at UCSF who has demonstrated a long-term commitment to mentoring of faculty in the academic health sciences. Mentoring is a critical component of productivity, career advancement and satisfaction for all health sciences faculty. This award will help to elevate the visibility and importance of mentoring on the UCSF campus. An award ceremony will be held on Wednesday, May 30 at noon in the Faculty Alumni House, 745 Parnassus Ave. The award recipient will be recognized with a plaque and honorarium. Last year, UCSF launched a mentoring program for junior and new faculty in response to faculty development needs. It was the first time faculty mentoring has been directed across all four schools through the Academic Affairs office. The need for faculty mentoring was identified in results from the 2002 UCSF Faculty Climate Survey, which showed the need for a faculty mentoring program to help recruit and retain the highest-quality faculty, increase faculty diversity through improved mentoring of underrepresented faculty and improve faculty satisfaction. UCSF also has instituted other changes based on feedback from the faculty survey, including launching a faculty leadership development program. Complete details and a nomination form are posted on the Academic Affairs website. For more information, please contact Mitchell D. Feldman, MD, MPhil, director of Faculty Mentoring, at 415/476-2428 or Heather Nichols, mentoring program coordinator, at 415/476-2015.
