UCSF School of Pharmacy Dean Mary Anne Koda-Kimble on Wednesday passed the UCSF AIDS Walk Trophy to Ifeyinwa Asiodu, team leader for the Summer Research Training Program, and Patricia Calarco, interim dean of the Graduate Division.
The pharmacy school had the honor of being the first campus recipient of the trophy - a bronzed running shoe formerly worn by UCSF Chancellor Mike Bishop - after their successful participation in the 2005 AIDS Walk.
On Wednesday, Dean Koda-Kimble passed the trophy to Asiodu, whose team had the most participants per capita in 2006. Asiodu's team, consisting of students from the UCSF Summer Research Training Program, had 62 percent participation in the annual trek to support AIDS research and patient care services.
"It was a great bonding experience for all of us to walk and raise money together," said Asiodu, whose team raised $3,090. "It was also great to meet students and faculty from other departments and be a part of the UCSF family."

Last summer's 20th Annual AIDS Walk San Francisco had 25,000 walkers, who raised $3.77 million for the San Francisco AIDS Foundation and 43 other Bay Area AIDS organizations.
Raising a total of $69,323, UCSF was ranked the fifth highest fundraiser. More than 450 walkers participated from UCSF, a 60 percent increase from last year. Also, the UCSF team raised $10,000 more than last year and surpassed the fundraising goal of $65,000. UCSF also was the top school fundraiser; the UC Berkeley team came in a distant second at $33,761.

Additional awards were granted to individual UCSF teams and participants. The first-time walker who raised the most money was Catharine Freyer, curriculum coordinator with the Department of Anatomy in the UCSF Medical School. Freyer raised $2,140 and was awarded a brand-new Macintosh MacBook, donated by Campus Life Services.
"I'm so excited to receive this award. I thought it was important to support and honor friends and family who are affected by HIV," said Freyer, who started fundraising just two weeks prior to the event. "I'm so grateful for the donations from faculty, staff and my friends in the community. It was so moving to see everyone come together and support such an important cause."

Honorable Mention
Special acknowledgments were granted to:
* Stephanie Belger: who led the UCSF School of Medicine team to more than double
its total contribution from $9,000 in 2005 to $19,058 in 2006. The School
of Medicine was also the top UCSF fundraising team overall.
* Roland Zepf: who organized the first-time team from the Positive Health Program,
which raised $4,735, and came in second place for the "Chancellor's Shoe, with 27 percent participation from their group.
* DeAnna Sosnowchik: who organized the first-time team from Microbiology and
Immunology, which raised $2,971, a greater total than many established teams.
"The extraordinary thing about AIDS Walk 2006 was the spirit of the walkers, the organizing committee and the volunteers who worked at the UCSF booth the day of the walk," said Carol Fox, director of special programs in Public Affairs, who led UCSF's efforts. "Teams arose spontaneously around the campus, which really made the event a success. The group had a great time and a lot of fun making it all happen."
