NCCC Preceptorships

PRECEPTORSHIP PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The preceptorships are a valuable training resource for enhancing the clinical consultation skills of AETC faculty members. The preceptorships provide two-day, on-site training at the University of California San Francisco, San Francisco General Hospital campus with Warmline, PEPline, Perinatal Hotline, San Francisco Area AETC, and Resistance Panel faculty members. The program is offered free of charge to AETC clinical consultants and NMAETC network providers (MD, PharmD, RN, NP, PA, and DDS).

NCCC Preceptorships are individualized according to participant needs and may include the following components:

1) Resistance Panel Participation
The panel consists of antiretroviral clinical and research experts from San Francisco General Hospital, the University of California San Francisco and the Positive Health Program. The panel, co-chaired by Steven Deeks, MD and Betty Dong, PharmD, assembles monthly to review in detail a complicated resistance case in the context of antiretroviral treatment strategies. The panel produces detailed reports of their recommendations that are posted on the Center’s website for educational purposes.

2) Participate in Warmline Consultations
Participants will learn to apply Warmline consultation methodologies by shadowing live calls and contributing to group discussions. Participants will be introduced to the process of identifying callers’ underlying educational needs. Sessions will include extensive discussion of ARV and OI treatment options that are most valuable in strengthening the participants’ consultation skills.

3) Participate in PEPline Consultations
Participants will observe and participate in the process of applying PEP guidelines and protocols to the nuances of actual exposure cases.

4) Participate in Perinatal Hotline Consultations
Participants will observe and participate in live calls involving perinatal HIV care and HIV testing during labor and delivery. The methodologies and concepts derived from the Warmline consultations are applied to this unique provider population.

5) Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI)
Participants will attend a Warmline/PEPline faculty member CQI meeting. During the CQI, faculty members will review consults with UCSF sub-specialists (e.g., neurology, laboratory med, endocrinology, etc) and educational cases. Methods employed to maintain state-of-the-art faculty member expertise in HIV and PEP consultation will be highlighted.

6) Best Practices
Participants and faculty members will review best practices employed by AETC consultants including on-site case discussion, consultation for special populations (i.e. correctional facilities) and email consultation. Participants will be asked to bring any material describing their work for this discussion.

7) Local Clinic Site Visit and Case Consultation
Participants may attend a site visit to one of the local area clinics for which San Francisco Area AETC faculty members provide case discussion and chart review.

ELIGIBILITY
All AETC affiliated clinical consultants (physicians, nurses, pharmacists) are eligible to attend NCCC preceptorships. Applicants must be approved by their regional AETC Director.
