School of Medicine Annual Fund
With State of California funding now accounting for less than
10 percent of the School of Medicine’s budget, private support
for the School’s Annual Fund is critical to UCSF’s ability
to provide today’s students with a superior medical education.
The School of Medicine’s leadership team has identified
the following priorities as those that best support its educational
mission:
Clinical Skills Learning Center
Shorter inpatient stays and a focus on outpatient care have significantly
reduced opportunities for medical students to learn patient care
skills in a traditional clinical setting. Contributions to the
Annual Fund help support the new Clinical Skills Learning Center,
which answers this challenge using coached actors as patients,
interactive software and sophisticated simulators for training
purposes.
E-Curriculum and Help Desk
A major component of the School of Medicine’s educational
program, the new e-curriculum provides online schedules, sample
tests, research materials, study aids, syllabi and many other
tools for students. Contributions to the Annual Fund play a vital
role in maintaining and developing this popular resource as well
as supporting a user help desk.
Medical Student Advisory Colleges
In order to provide structured faculty mentorship and guidance
for all students, UCSF’s five Advisory Colleges are each
headed by a senior faculty member who mentors and advises students,
tracks their progress, facilitates opportunities for research
and community service and provides career counseling. Contributions
to the Annual Fund provide the School with the means to continue
this valuable program.
Student Research Project Grants
The process of designing, proposing and executing a research project
enables students to experience firsthand the thrill of discovery
and prepares them to join the next generation of medical research
leaders. Contributions to the Annual Fund allow the School to
offer 20 competitive student research project grants of $2,500
each year.
Student Scholarships
Though a UCSF medical education is still an extraordinary bargain,
the high cost of living in the Bay Area presents a challenge for
many promising applicants. Contributions to the Annual Fund ensure
the School’s ability to offer significant financial aid
packages to outstanding students.
Study Abroad Grants
Working abroad expands students’ understanding of medicine
while providing valuable services in underserved areas of the
world. Contributions to the Annual Fund encourage such experiences
by providing students with study grants of $1,000–$3,000.
