Center for Health and Community
a comprehensive approach to health
More
than half of all preventable deaths could be avoided through changes
in behavior and lifestyle. But traditional medicine focuses on
treating illnesses rather than preventing them.
To establish more effective practices, researchers at the Center
for Health and Community are examining various barriers to health,
including cultural and ethnic disparities in health care; determining
effective methods for educating patients about appropriate measures
to prevent disease; and sharing their findings with colleagues
around the globe.
To ensure that tomorrow’s health-care providers and researchers
understand this person-centered approach to medicine, the Center's
faculty also teach students at UCSF's professional schools about
the social, cultural and behavioral aspects of health and illness.
Gifts to this priority will create several new endowed positions,
enabling the Center to recruit and retain top faculty and continue
its critical research.
