Exemplary Practices in Adolescent Development

The “Exemplary Practices in Adolescent Development” Report was supported by the Sierra Health Foundation to examine evidence-based programs that appear to be promising in terms of positively affecting health and development for youth aged 10-15. This report summarizes studies collected and analyzed as part of this effort and includes practices in asset development, resiliency, and peer programs in schools and communities. It also looks at risk behaviors including teen pregnancy, violence and bullying, mental health, substance abuse, obesity and eating disorders, and academic achievement. The report discusses common themes among promising programs and highlights promising strategies targeting different subpopulations. This report is available from the Sierra Health Foundation

Home Visiting Survey for Pregnant Women, Newborn Infants, and/or High-Risk Families

The report of the findings from the MCAH ACTION survey “Home Visiting for Pregnant Women, Newborn Infants, and/or High-Risk Families” will be released in late June. The MCAH ACTION Home Visiting Priority Workgroup, with assistance from FHOP, developed this survey which was sent to MCAH Directors in California’s 61 health local health jurisdictions (LHJ). The objectives of the survey were: 1) To develop a profile of the number and types of public health department home visiting programs serving this population; 2) To provide information to promote networking and collaboration among counties with home visiting programs; and 3) To provide data to inform potential health care legislation that would include home visiting services as a covered benefit. The MCAH Directors were asked to distribute the survey to home visiting programs in the public health department serving woman, children and families. Surveys were returned from 34 LHJs. The report presents the results compiled from the surveys, reflecting the great variation in approaches to providing home visiting services in California.

FHOP Budget Cut and Reduced Scope of Work

As of July 1st FHOP will be operating with a budget that is 60% of what we have had in the past. This means that we will only be able to do two trainings and will no longer be funded for on-site technical assistance. We will continue to maintain the web site and the data development activities including the data spreadsheets. We will be completing the EpiHOSP upgrade, distribution of new hospital data files and trainings and maintain EpiBC. The cuts have resulted in the lay off three staff; Nadia Thind (Research Assistant), Suzanne Ezrre (FHOP Web Administrator) and Ruth Estrada (Administrative Assistant). In our next newsletter we will provide you with a summary of redefined functions for remaining staff to assist you in directing your technical assistance requests. We are also developing a brochure of training and technical assistance that local health jurisdictions may negotiate directly with FHOP outside of the MCAH funded contract activities. We will do our best to provide maximum service given our much more limited resources.
