INDIVIDUAL
FELLOWSHIPS:
American
Foundation for Pharmaceutical Education
http://www.afpenet.org
To encourage outstanding pre-doctoral students, who have completed
at least three semesters of graduate study and have not more than
three years remaining, to continue their studies and earn the
Ph.D. in the pharmaceutical sciences at a U.S. school or college
of pharmacy. Applications are encouraged from students with the
following majors: Medicinal/Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Pharmaceutics,
Pharmacology/Toxicology, Pharmacy Administration, Pharmacognosy,
Pharmacokinetics/Metabolism, and the Pharmaceutical Sciences .
A maximum of seventy-five (75) Fellowships (renewals and new awards)
are awarded annually. Fellowship stipends can range from $6,000
to $10,000 annually. The Fellowship stipend may be used for any
purpose decided by the awardee and college that will enable the
student to make progress in their pursuit of the Ph.D., e.g.,
student stipend, laboratory supplies, books, materials, travel,
etc. None of the funds shall be used for indirect costs by the
institution. The number of AFPE Pre-doctoral Fellowships awarded
each year depends on the availability of funds. Students who have
completed at least three (3) semesters of graduate study toward
the Ph.D. and who have no more than three (3) years remaining
to obtain the Ph.D. degree in a graduate program in the pharmaceutical
sciences administered by, or affiliated with, a U.S. school or
college of pharmacy. Students enrolled in joint Pharm.D./Ph.D.
programs are eligible to apply if they have completed the equivalent
of three full semesters of graduate credit toward the Ph.D., and
if the Ph.D. degree will be awarded within three (3) additional
years. The applicant must be a U.S. citizen or a permanent resident.
National
Defense Science and Engineering Graduate (NDSEG) Fellowships
http://www.asee.org/ndseg/
The Department of Defense is committed to increasing the number
and quality of our Nation's scientists and engineers. Toward that
end, the DoD annually supports approximately 8,000 graduate students
in fields important to national defense needs.
The DOD supports
graduate students in a number of ways. First and foremost is the
support of thousands of graduate students who are members of research
teams funded through DOD grants and contracts. The students, selected
by the research faculty, engage in fundamental studies under the
leadership of a senior researcher and commensurately earn advanced
degrees. Usually, these students are supported wholly by the DOD
grant or contract.
Another mechanism
for graduate student support is through portable fellowships,
such as those awarded to U.S. citizens following a national competition
each year under the National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate
Fellowship Program. The actual number of awards varies from year
to year depending upon the available funding.
140 fellowships
were awarded in 1999
108 fellowships were awarded in 2000
285 fellowships were awarded in 2001
170 fellowships were awarded in 2002
They are awards
conferring high honors upon the recipients. These fellowships
are portable and allow the recipients to pursue their graduate
studies at whichever university they choose to attend.
PhRMA Foundation
http://www.phrmafoundation.org/awards/outcomes/predoc.phtml
PhRMA Foundation recognizes that the training of such individuals
is long and expensive, requiring four to five years of post baccalaureate
study and research. To provide some assistance in this training
sequence, the PhRMA Foundation program aims at supporting promising
students during their thesis research. The program provides a
stipend and funds to cover costs incidental to the training. Applications
will be accepted for a minimum of one year and a maximum of two
years. The fellowship program of advanced predoctoral support
is designed to assist full-time, in-residence Ph.D. candidates
in the fields of health outcomes who are enrolled in U.S. schools
of medicine, pharmacy, dentistry or schools of public health.
The program seeks to support advanced students who will have completed
the bulk of their pre-thesis requirements (two years of study)
and are starting their thesis research by the time the award is
activated. Students just starting in graduate school should not
apply.
FOR
ENTERING/FIRST YEAR STUDENTS:
National
Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program
http://www.ehr.nsf.gov/dge/programs/grf/
The National Science Foundation (NSF) seeks to ensure the vitality
of the human resource base of science, mathematics, and engineering
in the United States and to reinforce its diversity. A competition
is conducted for Graduate Research Fellowships, with additional
awards offered for women in engineering and computer and information
science. NSF Graduate Fellowships offer recognition and three years
of support for advanced study to approximately 900 outstanding graduate
students in the mathematical, physical, biological, engineering,
and behavioral and social sciences, including the history of science
and the philosophy of science, and to research-based PhD degrees
in science education. Approximately 90 awards will be in the Women
in Engineering (WENG) and Women in Computer and Information Science
(WICS) components. Awards made in March 2002 carry a stipend for
each fellow of $21,500 for a 12-month tenure (prorated monthly at
$1,791 for lesser periods) and an annual cost-of-education allowance
of $10,500, paid to the Fellow's institution in lieu of tuition
and fees. Note that the stipend for all Graduate Research Fellows
for the 2002-2003 fellowship year has been increased to $21,500
a year (prorated at $1,791 a month for lesser periods).

Life Sciences Research Foundation
http://www.lsrf.org/welcome.htm
The LSRF solicits monies from industry, foundations and individuals
to support postdoctoral fellowships in the life sciences.
Three-year fellowships will be awarded on a competitive basis to
graduates of medical and graduate schools in the biological sciences
holding M.D., Ph.D., D.V.M. or D.D.S. degrees. Awards will be based
solely on the quality of the individual applicant's previous accomplishments,
and on the merit of the proposal for postdoctoral research. Persons
doing a second postdoc are eligible only if they are transferring
to a different supervisor's laboratory and embarking on a new project
not connected to their previous research. All U.S. citizens are
eligible to apply with no geographic restriction on the laboratory
of their choice. Foreign applicants will be eligible for study in
U.S. laboratories. LSRF fellows must carry out their research at
nonprofit institutions. This fellowship cannot be used to support
research that has any patent commitment or other kind of agreement
with a commercial profit-making company. LSRF fellows can change
projects, laboratories, and/or institutions during the fellowship
as long as the eligibility rules listed here are not violated. A
person holding a faculty appointment is not eligible to apply for
an LSRF fellowship.
