Understanding principles that enable linkage of molecular level information and knowledge to clinical level data and information to optimize and individualize therapies

The Hunt Group is addressing several contemporary problems and answering questions that are central to the Program's mission. Understanding the multiple, interacting factors that govern and modulate access of therapeutic agents to molecular target sites in patients epitomizes research at the interface of chemistry and biology.

How can such access be optimized? How and why do drug-initiated cascades alter their local environment to modulate that access? Can individual variations in gene expression account for the large interindividual variability in both access to the target and the subsequent cascade of molecular events? Can the patterns in these events be detected, understood and visualized using advanced Bioinformatic and Computational Biology technologies to analyze microarray measures of gene expression? Will identification and an understanding of these patterns enable individually optimum therapeutic strategies (e.g., for breast cancer)? Given a therapeutic strategy (from putative to validated), how-at various levels-can it be optimized? The levels of knowledge needed to answer such questions range from the molecular, to the system, to populations of patients, etc.
