MLK Week Events
UCSF will celebrate the life
of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with a series of campus events, January
16 to 19.
NASA
astronaut Yvonne D. Cagle, MD, will be UCSF's special guest and keynote
speaker for the campus' 15th annual MLK Commemoration Week.
She will speak at San Francisco General Hospital Medical Center on Tuesday,
January 16, at noon in Carr Auditorium. On Wednesday, January 17, she
will deliver the keynote address -- "Remembering Our Past as We Reach
for the Future" -- at noon in Cole Hall. She will spend the morning
of January 17 discussing "Medicine in Space" with students from San
Francisco public schools, who have been invited to the Parnassus campus.
The week will be a Bay Area
homecoming for Cagle, a native of Novato who spends most of her time
at NASA's Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center in Houston. Cagle received
a bachelor of arts degree in biochemistry from San Francisco State University
(1981) and her MD degree from the University of Washington (1985). After
an internship at Transitional Highland General Hospital in Oakland,
Cagle received certification in Aerospace Medicine from the School of
Aerospace Medicine at Brooks Air Force Base, TX, in 1988. In 1992, she
completed a residency in family practice from Eastern Virginia Medical
School and received certification as a senior aviation medical examiner
from the Federal Aviation Administration in 1995.
Some of Cagles honors
include the National Defense Service Medal, Air Force Achievement Medal,
United States Air Force Air Staff Exceptional Physician Commendation,
the National Technical Association Distinguished Scientist Award, Outstanding
Women of America award and commendations from the Marin County Board
of Supervisors and Novato School Board.
