MLK Week Events

UCSF will celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with a series of campus events, January 16 to 19.

Yvonne D. Cagle MDNASA astronaut Yvonne D. Cagle, MD, will be UCSF's special guest and keynote speaker for the campus' 15th annual MLK Commemoration Week. She will speak at San Francisco General Hospital Medical Center on Tuesday, January 16, at noon in Carr Auditorium. On Wednesday, January 17, she will deliver the keynote address -- "Remembering Our Past as We Reach for the Future" -- at noon in Cole Hall. She will spend the morning of January 17 discussing "Medicine in Space" with students from San Francisco public schools, who have been invited to the Parnassus campus.

The week will be a Bay Area homecoming for Cagle, a native of Novato who spends most of her time at NASA's Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center in Houston. Cagle received a bachelor of arts degree in biochemistry from San Francisco State University (1981) and her MD degree from the University of Washington (1985). After an internship at Transitional Highland General Hospital in Oakland, Cagle received certification in Aerospace Medicine from the School of Aerospace Medicine at Brooks Air Force Base, TX, in 1988. In 1992, she completed a residency in family practice from Eastern Virginia Medical School and received certification as a senior aviation medical examiner from the Federal Aviation Administration in 1995.

Some of Cagle’s honors include the National Defense Service Medal, Air Force Achievement Medal, United States Air Force Air Staff Exceptional Physician Commendation, the National Technical Association Distinguished Scientist Award, Outstanding Women of America award and commendations from the Marin County Board of Supervisors and Novato School Board.

The following is the schedule of events organized by the campus' MLK Commemoration Week Committee:

Tuesday, January 16

  • MLK Awards Ceremony, 12 to 2 p.m., Cole Hall. Chancellor Bishop invites the campus to honor individuals chosen from faculty, staff and students who have furthered the goal of achieving ethnic diversity at UCSF. This year's awardees are: J. Renee Navarro, PharmD, MD, associate clinical professor of anesthesia; Robert L. Okin, MD, vice chair and professor of psychiatry and chief of psychiatry at SFGHMC; Gloria Jackson, a supervisor for the Medical Center's billing services; Al Lopez, senior technician for the Medical Center's Respiratory Care Services; and Rameek McNair, a fourth-year dental student.   • Lt. Col. Yvonne D. Cagle, MD, speaks at SFGHMC, Carr Auditorium, noon. Reception follows.

  • UCSF Gospel Choir performs, noon, Mount Zion Lobby

Wednesday, January 17

  • "Medicine in Space," a presentation by Cagle to students from the SF Unified School District, 9 to 11:30 a.m.

  • Keynote Address "Remembering Our Past as We Reach for The Future," by Cagle, noon, Cole Hall.

Thursday, January 18

  • This week's performance of the Chancellor's Concert Series is dedicated in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, noon, Cole Hall.

  • MLK Celebration at Mission Center, noon, Room 126. Includes refreshments and performance by UCSF Gospel Choir.

  • Movie and forum. "Bamboozled," 5:45 and 8 p.m., Cole Hall. The film is Spike Lee's insightful look at an entertainment style from the past, including ethnic portrayals that reinforce many negative cultural stereotypes. Michael Adams, director of the UCSF Office of Affirmative Action, Equal Opportunity, and Diversity, will lead discussion before the movie.

Friday, January 19

  • MLK XV Closing Cultural Fest, Millberry Union Gym, Pure Ecstasy11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The festival acknowledges the contributions by various "service" groups that make the US great. The event also features the Bay Area group Pure Ecstasy, whose music is "universal, timeless and transcends cultural boundaries." Cultural dancers, ethnic foods, prizes and "hero" displays will also be featured.

  • Movie and forum. "Bamboozled," 6:30 and 9 p.m., Cole Hall. UCSF professor John Watson, chair of the UCSF Black Caucus and co-chair of the Chancellor's Committee on Diversity, will lead discussion prior to the movie.

In addition to the MLK Commemoration Celebration Committee, co-sponsors of the week's events include the following UCSF departments and groups: Academic Affairs, Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity/Diversity, Black Caucus, Center for Gender Equity, Council of Minority Organizations, Empact! Presents, Office of Student Relations, Pathology Department, Staff Council.
