UCSF Drafts Staff Leave Policy UCSF has drafted a new policy that allows staff, who are not represented by unions, to be granted up to 40 hours a year of education and development leave during regularly scheduled work hours. The policy marks the first time UCSF has put into writing what has long been a basic premise that departments are responsible for allowing employees to attend required training to perform their job duties. The campus is seeking comments on the final draft of the proposed Education and Development Leave Policy for non-represented employees. Baring no major revisions as a result of campus feedback, the policy is expected to become official this spring, according to Julius Katz, labor and employee relations coordinator at Human Resources. The policy states that non-represented employees may participate in programs which may enhance their ability to perform on the job and/or to build their skills and knowledge to prepare them for new assignments or positions within the University. Leave must be approved in advance and scheduled according to operational needs within departments. "The University as well as the UCSF campus has launched an aggressive work-life initiative that recognizes the need to create a more supportive work environment," says Randy Lopez, assistant vice chancellor of Human Resources. "Such support enables employees to balance more effectively the demands of work and personal lives. UCSF recognizes education and training are essential elements for personal and professional growth of all individuals. The proposed policy is but one way to respond to this workplace need." During the past 12 months, this leave policy was developed by Human Resources and a sub-committee on staff development and education/training leave as part of the Campuswide Ad Hoc Supportive Work Environment Committee. All groups have given their strong endorsement in recommending adoption of this campus policy. "Im delighted the policy has been released for campus review," says Alma Sisco-Smith, co-director of the supportive work environment committee. "Its long overdue."
