Campus to Honor Diversity Efforts at MLK Week

Five members of the campus have been named winners of the 2001 Martin Luther King Jr. Award for their extraordinary efforts to promote diversity at UCSF.

The winners of the annual MLK awards are:

  • J. Renee Navarro, PharmD, MD, associate clinical professor of anesthesia and perioperative care and chief of staff at San Francisco General Medical Center (SFGHMC) for 2001-2003.

  • Robert L. Okin, MD, vice chair and professor of psychiatry and chief of psychiatry at San Francisco General Hospital Medical Center.

  • Gloria Jackson, a supervisor for the Medical Center's billing services.

  • Al Lopez, senior technician for the Medical Center's Respiratory Care Services

  • Rameek McNair, a fourth-year dental student.

They will be honored on Tuesday, January 16, at a ceremony, noon 2 to p.m., in Cole Hall. The awards presentation is part of the campus' weeklong celebration of the life of Martin Luther King Jr. (See previous Daybreak story) for schedule of events.

Navarro, honored in the faculty category for the award, has shown "leadership and compassion with her colleagues, residents, nurses, students, and the patients [at SFGHMC] who are among the poorest in the city," said her nominators. Navarro, who has served on the Medical School Admissions Committee and the Department of Anesthesia's Resident Selection committee, has been a "vigorous advocate of underrepresented ethnic groups."

Okin was selected because of his "dedicated, tireless and courageous work over the years to continue the work of the ethnic-focused [psychiatric] units. This year, especially, "he has repeatedly saved the units from major cuts," said his nominators. "His commitment to poor and powerless psychiatric patients of all ethnic groups is expressed in his active involvement in exposing substandard care for mentally ill individuals throughout the world," they said. "he has visited psychiatric hospitals in the Ukraine, Hungary, Armenia and Mexico, exposed the inhumane conditions in many of their psychiatric institutions and consulted with governments of these nations to improve services for the mentally ill."

Jackson and Lopez, who were honored in the award's staff category, are longtime campus employees who have "promoted and advanced mutual respect and understanding and appreciation for cultural diversity during their entire tenure on the UCSF campus." Both have been active in the UCSF Council of Minority Organizations.

In the late '60s at UCSF, Jackson was busy fighting for "equal access and removal of [institutional) barriers" for the mostly minority janitors, maids, laundry workers, kitchen staff and patient escorts. She has been a leader of the United Filipino Employees Association and was a member of the first committee for the biannual Women's Leadership Symposium.

Lopez, a leader of the Latin American Campus Association, was hailed for promoting the hiring of underrepresented groups and fighting for the underdog. "Staff know this and seek him out when they have a problem," said his nominators. "It is because of people like Al that we were able to sensitize administrators about affirmative action and cultural and ethnic diversity.

McNair is the MLK award winner in the student category. Before entering UCSF, he participated in the School of Dentistry's Undergraduate Mentorship Program in 1995 and later in the UCSF Summer Research Training Program. He is the current president of the Student National Dental Association and has helped the group focus on minority retention, recruitment and outreach in dentistry. He has been instrumental in setting up regional health fairs that target underprivileged children. The past two summers, he has served as a mentor to minority high school and college students who attend the campus' Health Science Enrichment Program and Undergraduate Mentorship Program.
