Recycling Tips for the Holidays

The campus' Recycling Program at this time each year offers advice for those interested in mixing the spirit of conservation with the holiday spirit.

The program, sponsored by Facilities Management, offers these tips:

  • For gifts, consider long-lasting and energy-saving ones, such as solar-powered calculators and flashlights, insulated lunch bags, refillable pens, composting bins, canvas shopping bags, and ceramic mugs.

  • Also consider giving books or magazines, which can be shared or recycled.

  • Buy holiday cards printed on recycled paper, or make your own from old cards.

  • Put gifts in reusable receptacles such as hatboxes, backpacks or canvas totebags.

  • Wrap them in comics, magazine paper, scarves, cloth napkins or fabric. Also try reusable baskets and tins, or decorate grocery bags or butcher paper.

  • Trim gifts with cotton yarn, twine, shoelaces or fabric ribbon.

  • When mailing presents, use air-popped corn, newspaper or scrap paper.

  • Make gift tags from old cards. Don’t forget to save this year’s wrapping paper, cards, calendars and packing materials for next year’s tags and wrapping.

  • Consider buying and decorating a potted tree or plant, which can be used next year as well.

  • Make your own ornaments from reusable or recyclable material.
