Holiday Street Safety Tips

During the holiday season, the UCSF Police Department encourages members of the campus to exercise extra care when walking outside, especially to and from points of transportation.

The police department offers the following safety tips to reduce your chances of becoming a crime victim:

  • Travel with a friend or in a group.

  • Be alert and aware of your surroundings. Avoid dark, vacant, or deserted areas -- use well-lit, frequently traveled routes.

  • Dress in clothes and shoes that will not hamper movement. Be especially careful of dangling jewelry, large pierced earrings and scarves wrapped around the neck.

  • Never display large amounts of cash. Use checks and credit cards when possible.

  • Keep your credit cards and ID in a safe place and don’t carry them all in one place when you shop.

  • Be extra careful with purses and wallets. Carry your purse tightly under your arm or underneath your coat. Don’t put your purse on the floor in a restaurant or public restrooms. Don't leave it unattended, even for a minute.
  • Immediately after the holidays, mark new gifts with your California Driver’s License or ID number. Engravers may be borrowed by calling Crime Prevention at 476-8901. Etch the number(s) on more than one location. One should be visible and the other hidden. Marked property is more difficult to dispose of and easier to recover, if stolen.

  • If you drink, don’t drive.

If you sense that you are in trouble:

  • Move away from the potential threat.

  • Cross the street and increase your pace.

  • If a threatening situation is imminent and people are close by – yell, scream or make a commotion in any way that you can to get their attention.

  • Go to an open business, if available.

  • Report all crimes (actual, attempted or suspected) to the police.

Safety presentations conducted by the UCSF Police Department can be scheduled for your department. Call the 476-8901 for an appointment.
