Gym Turns Shopping Center for a Day

Some talented UCSF artists and crafters will be among the vendors at Empact! Presents' annual Holiday Shopping Spree, Thursday, December 7, at the Millberry Union Gym.

Fifty-six booths will feature floral arrangements, glassware, wood carvings, clothing, holiday crafts, leather goods, toys, Nike athletic apparel, and more. Shopping hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

One-third of the vendors are UCSF staff, who will get to show off some hidden talents.

Tineka (Catharina) Mathews, a staff research associate in the School of Dentistry, is back for her fifth UCSF fair to sell jars of jams and preserves, packaged in gift boxes or baskets if the buyer prefers to add a holiday touch. She and her husband, Mike, started a home business -- Mt. Valley Orchard -- after a couple bought their entire inventory of preserves at a garage sale.

Back then, they had only four varieties, but have since concocted more than 80 jams and preserves. They typically have 30 to 40 varieties available each week and sell them at farmer's markets around the Bay Area. For the UCSF event on Thursday, Mathews will top off each jar with complimentary "hats" tied on gold or silver ribbon. "We have gained many new friends through the years of doing this (holiday fair)," said Tineka. "People tell us 'we just love your preserves' and 'we can't eat store brands anymore.' I don't think we'll ever grow tired of hearing it."

Zarah Gamaldi, a Facilities Management assistant, will take a break Thursday from fielding calls about burned-out lights, ceiling leaks and too warm or cold room temperatures. She'll be at the Millberry Gym playing a different role -- "Creative Memories consultant."

"My hidden passion is scrapbooking," she said. "I love removing my piles of photos from shoeboxes and organizing them in creative scrapbook layouts. I add colorful embellishments and jot down invaluable personal thoughts. I am creating a wonderful family heirloom using photo-safe materials."

Gamaldi is impressed by what co-workers do away from their jobs. "I am continually fascinated when I speak with fellow UCSF Facilities Management employees and learn of their exciting lives outside campus," she said. "Mild-mannered coworkers turn out to be race car drivers, motorcycle enthusiasts, dance performers, independent record label promoters and skydivers."

She looks forward to showing her talent to people on campus. "I'll share with you how you can learn more about your family and friends while creating your own scrapbook or album about your passion or a special trip, new family member, little league team or club," she said.

Lawrence Brown, a mail services supervisor, has had a booth every year at the Holiday Shopping Spree. His company -- The African Connection -- offers authentic African art, hand-made vases, clothes and bags.

"I love participating in these annual events because it gives me a sense of campus community," said Brown.
