VAMC Psychiatrist Named Federal Employee of the Year

Frank Schoenfeld, MD, UCSF clinical professor of psychiatry and director of the Post Traumatic Stress program at San Francisco Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC), has been named a Federal Employee of the Year.

Schoenfeld, who has worked for 30 years with Vietnam War veterans with post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), received the honor earlier this month. The Federal Executive Board's local office, which coordinates all federal government facilities in Northern California, gives out employee of the year awards in 13 categories annually. Schoenfeld won in the professional category, which includes scientists, engineers and others.

Schoenfeld, who began his work with Vietnam veterans at an Air Force clinic in 1970, came to the San Francisco VAMC in 1972 and has been a co-director or director of the PTSD clinic since it was founded.

Last year, he was part of a VAMC team that aided people in Taiwan cope with a devastating earthquake in that country.
