Flu Vaccine Clinic Cancelled

The Flu Vaccine Clinic, scheduled from Nov. 27 to Dec. 8 in the Ambulatory Care Center, has been cancelled because of production and shipping delays of the vaccine nationwide.

UCSF received only 1,000 of the 5,300 vaccine doses ordered from the manufacturer and it's not clear if or when the UCSF Medical Center will receive additional supplies. Typically, about 500 vaccines are administered during the first day of the clinic.

To ensure that the vaccine is available to those at highest risk, the vaccine will be administered to patients who meet the following criteria:

  • Age 65 years and older;
  • Residents of nursing homes and other chronic care facilities who have chronic medical conditions;
  • Patients age 6 months and older who have chronic pulmonary or cardiovascular disease, including asthma; who have required regular medical follow-up or hospitalization during the past year because of chronic metabolic diseases (including diabetes), kidney dysfunction, blood disorders (hemoglobinopathies) or immune system problems caused by conditions such as HIV infection, chemotherapy or radiation therapy;
  • Children and teenagers (age 6 months to 18 years) receiving long-term aspirin therapy who might be at risk for developing Reye Syndrome after influenza infection;
  • Women who will be in the second or third trimester of pregnancy during the flu season.

From Nov. 27 to Dec. 8, an ACC staff member will be available in the ACC lobby to greet patients who aren't aware that the clinic has been cancelled. Patients who meet the criteria for vaccination will be directed to the 6th floor, where flu shots will be administered in two examination rooms, Monday to Friday from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. and from 1 to 4 p.m. The vaccine will be available to high-risk patients who drop-in requesting the vaccine or those who have been sent there by their provider

Patients who don't meet the criteria for vaccination will be turned away and provided information regarding alternative resources for the vaccine.

If the vaccine is depleted before Dec. 8, the 6th floor clinic will be closed and all practices notified immediately. A limited quantity of vaccine is being distributed to practices with patients in the high-risk categories. These doses should be reserved for elderly patients or those with mobility problems. All other high-risk patients should be directed to the 6th floor of the ACC.

If the Medical Center receives notice of an additional vaccine shipment, it will reconsider scheduling the Flu Vaccine Clinic in mid-December.
