Lung Cancer Awareness Rally A rally to raise awareness of the nation's deadliest cancer will be held on Saturday, November 4, 10 a.m. to noon, at the steps of San Francisco City Hall. Speakers will include Virginia Ernster, PhD, UCSF professor of epidemiology and a national expert on women and smoking. Lung cancer survivors will also address the crowd. The event in San Francisco will coincide with rallies in New York, Washington, DC, and other cities. Sponsors of the San Francisco rally include David Jablons, MD, UCSF assistant professor of surgery, and the UCSF Thoracic Oncology Program. Lung cancer will kill more Californians this year than breast, colorectal, ovarian and prostate cancers combined, however, research spending for lung cancer ranks below the breast, prostate and colon cancers. The incidence and survival rates for lung cancer could be drastically improved with increased research, early detection, and prevention, say rally organizers. Tobacco settlement monies are not currently required to be spent on tobacco-related diseases, they say. For more information about the rally, visit the website or contact Carolyn Clary-Macy, RN, at 415/885-7283. Links: |
