Radiation Oncology Professor Honored

David Larson, MD, PhD, UCSF professor of radiation oncology, was inducted yesterday (October 24) as president of the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ASTRO) at the society’s annual meeting in Boston.

Larson is the co-director of the UCSF Gamma Knife program, which has treated more than 1500 patients since it opened in 1991. He is an expert in treating brain tumors and tumors of the central nervous system. In addition to his work with Gamma Knife radiosurgery, he has also had extensive experience using 3D conformal radiotherapy and brachytherapy.

In 1988, he founded the linear accelerator radiosurgery program and facility at UCSF.

Larson has worked to develop formal standards of care for radiosurgery. He helped to form an ASTRO committee to define standards for radiation therapy indications, patient selection, dosing, quality control, follow-up and training. Published in 1993, these guidelines are widely used by current radiation oncology treatment centers, by physicians planning a new facility, and by health care insurers.

He is currently studying ways to improve the accuracy of patient treatments through techniques such as incorporation of better imaging, improved patient positioning. He is also studying how chemicals used to enhance imaging of tumors can make cells more or less sensitive to later radiation treatment.

ASTRO strives to advance the practice of radiation oncology by disseminating the results of scientific research, promoting excellence in patient care, providing opportunities for educational and professional development of its members and representing radiation oncology in a rapidly evolving socioeconomic healthcare environment.
