Campus to Celebrate Diversity Week

A talk by race relations pioneer Jane Elliott will highlight UCSF's Diversity Week Celebration, October 23-27.

Elliott, a former Iowa schoolteacher and nationally known leader in the fight against prejudice, will present her talk on Wednesday, October 25, noon to 2 p.m., in Cole Hall. Admission is free.

Jane ElliottElliott is the creator of the "Blue Eyes, Brown Eyes" discrimination experiment, a sensitizing exercise in which participants are labeled inferior or superior based on the color of their eyes. She designed the exercise in a third-grade classroom in all-white, all-Christian Riceville, Iowa immediately after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. It has been repeated with dramatic results with children and adults throughout the country. The exercise provided a model for diversity training programs.

Elliott, once selected as ABC TV's "Person of the Week," is a recipient of the National Mental Health Association Award for Excellence in Education. She has been a guest lecturer at numerous universities, civil service organizations, elementary schools, and businesses. She has appeared in a wide variety of television programs, including "The Today Show," "Donahue," and the "Oprah Winfrey Show." Her work has been the subject of three award-winning films: "Eye of the Storm," "Eye of the Beholder," and "Blue Eyed." Disney Studios plans to produce a feature-length film starring Susan Sarandon as Elliott.

Also during Diversity Week, an awards luncheon will be held on Tuesday, October 24, to honor campus units that have demonstrated "best practices" planning for achieving staff diversity. The luncheon is by invitation only.

For Diversity Week, campus administrators are encouraging campus units to celebrate diversity in their own special way, such as potluck of different foods, sharing a video regarding diversity, or even a small meeting to learn more about one another.

Diversity Week is sponsored by the Chancellor’s Committee on Diversity; Office of Affirmative Action, Equal Opportunity and Diversity; Chancellor’s Executive Diversity Committee; and the Flora and William Hewlett Foundation.

Co-sponsors include: the Chancellor's Office; Academic Affairs; Office of Research; Administration & Finance; University Advancement & Planning; Schools of Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing and Pharmacy; the Medical Center; Campus Auxiliary Services; Center for Gender Equity; Empact! Presents; Worklife Resource Center; Academic Business Officers Group; Chancellor’s Advisory Committee on the Status of Women; Council of Minority Organizations; Disability Interest Group; and the UCSF Staff Council.
