"Champions Run" to Benefit UCSF Pediatric AIDS Unit The second annual Champions Run for Children, featuring former Olympic runners from more than 10 countries, will be held Sunday, October 29, at Kezar Stadium. The elite invitational "Champions" race will be preceded by the Jamba Juice 5K, which starts at 9 a.m. at Kezar Stadium. The 5K race, open to the general public, is a benefit for the UCSF Pediatric AIDS unit of the AIDS Research Institute. The one-mile Champions Run last year attracted the largest collection of sub-four minute mile runners in Bay Area history. That race included four-time Olympian and US 5000 meter record holder Regina Jacobs and Russian Olympian Lyudmilla Vasilyeva, who won last year's event at Kezar Stadium. This year, Olympians from the Sydney Games are expected to participate in one-mile races. The total prize purse is $30,000. The Champions Run will include men and women's open and masters categories. Later in the day, children under 18 will be invited to run with Olympic athletes in a series of fun races on the Kezar track. The race festival will also include food, music, clowns and face painters. Participants in the Jamba Juice 5K run will assemble at 8 a.m. "It is great that the event is focusing on the care of children with HIV," said Diane Wara, medical director of the UCSF pediatric AIDS program. "Society doesn't talk about the problem enough and I am excited to be a part of a running race that is carrying the message. Tying it to a festival that is designed to get children running is a big plus, and I'm looking forward to participating with our staff, patients and their families." Registration for the 5K race is $20 per person before October 20, and $25 after and on race day. For children under 18, the cost is $10 before October 20, and $15 after. For a registration form, call 415/759-2690 or visit the event website. |
