Memorial Celebration for Civil Rights Champion, UCSF Friend A memorial celebration will be held for Ruth Chance -- a philanthropist, civil rights advocate and former senior scholar at the UCSF Institute for Health and Aging -- on Monday, October 2, 2 to 4 p.m., at the San Francisco Main Library's Koret Auditorium. Chance, who died July 26 in San Francisco at the age of 94, served from 1959 to 1974 as executive director of the Rosenberg Foundation, which under her leadership supported the early development of social movements among Mexican-Americans, students and farmworkers. In 1986, Chance received the UC Medal, the highest honor awarded by the campus, as an outspoken champion of civil rights and a national spokesperson in the field of aging. As a senior scholar for the UCSF Institute for Health and Aging (IHA) in the 1980s, Chance served as a mentor and role model for faculty and students. "Ruth was a feisty, articulate and committed humanitarian and legal scholar who for decades provided vision and leadership in the world of philanthropy in the cause of civil rights and social justice," said Carroll Estes, founding director of the IHA and UCSF professor of social and behavioral sciences. "As a senior scholar she challenged us as researchers to work of issues on intergenerational justice -- such as health and economic security -- that concern both young and old. Her legacy is measured in her mentorship of numerous philanthropic and legal scholars including young scholars in the IHA." A graduate of UC Berkeley and an attorney, Chance also served on several state boards, including the State Board of Social Welfare in the 1950s and the Youth Services Commission in the 1970s. She also served on the boards of the American Justice Institute, Commonweal, Equal Rights Advocates, Global Perspectives in Education, the Pioneer Fund and the San Francisco Education Fund. Links: |
