Breast Cancer Awareness Month

The UCSF Comprehensive Cancer Center invites members of the campus and individuals throughout the Bay Area to participate in October Breast Cancer Awareness Month events and fundraising activities.

Events range from the October 7 "Taste for the Cure" -- a day of cooking, fitness, art and science at the Galleria in San Francisco -- to the October 22 "Making Strides Against Breast Cancer," a non-competitive walking event, sponsored by the American Cancer Society, in Golden Gate Park.

The annual "Race for the Cure," which traditionally draws many UCSF participants, will be held on Sunday, October 15, at Sharon Meadow in Golden Gate Park. The 5K race, sponsored by the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, benefits breast cancer research, local education, screening and treatment programs. Runners and walkers may join the UCSF Comprehensive Cancer Center's team (number 38) when they register for the event. Registration is $22 advance, or $25 on the day of the race.

The Comprehensive Center has a website listing Breast Cancer Awareness Month events in the Bay Area. Events and information will be added as they become available.

The Center for Gender Equity at UCSF is also sponsoring two events for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

  • Monday, October 2 -- "Obsessed with Breasts -- The Breast Cancer Fund's Public Awareness Campaign." Andrea Martin, executive director and founder of the Breast Cancer Fund, will share the educational goals of the controversial campaign, which showed images of models with mastectomy scars. Martin will also discuss the fund's current programs and how people can get involved in the fight against breast cancer. 12: to 1 p.m., S 159, Medical Sciences Building, 513 Parnassus. Free.
  • Monday, October 16 -- "How I Coped when Mommy Died." This powerful 30-minute documentary about how Brett Hardy Blake experienced the loss of his mother to breast cancer when he was 10 years old and moved from grief to healing was co-produced with his legal guardian and cousin, Emmy award-winning Lori Hope. Both Hardy Blake and Hope, who has produced over 20 documentaries, will be available to share their story and discuss their work, 12 to 1:30 p.m, Room C 130, Clinical Sciences Building, 521 Parnassus. Free. For information about this and the October 2 program, call 476-5222.
