July 2000 Two Faculty Appointed to Distinguished Professorships UCSF Chancellor J. Michael Bishop and UC President Richard Atkinson have recently approved the appointment of two UCSF School of Dentistry faculty members to new distinguished professorships, each with endowments of $2.5 million. John Featherstone, PhD, chair of the department of preventive and restorative dental sciences, has been appointed to the first of two Leland and Gladys Barber Distinguished Professorships. Karin Vargervik, DDS, chair of the department of growth and development and the director of the UCSF Center for Craniofacial Anomalies, has been appointed to the Larry L. Hillblom Distinguished Professorship in Craniofacial Anomalies. The appointment to a distinguished professorship signifies recognition of a faculty member's outstanding contribution to the school, University, and to his or her discipline. "The School of Dentistry is extraordinarily fortunate to have faculty of the caliber of Dr. Featherstone and Dr. Vargervik as the inaugural occupants of these distinguished professorships. The benefactors after whom these professorships were named have provided an enduring legacy for generations to come," says Dean Charles N. Bertolami, DDS, DMedSc, professor. |
