Ornish Named to White House Commission on Complementary and Alternative Medicine Dean Ornish, MD, clinical professor of medicine at UCSF and a founder of the Osher Center for Integrative Medicine, was one of 13 people appointed by President Clinton to the White House Commission on Complementary and Alternative Medicine Policy. Ornish, renowned for his studies and programs proving that heart disease is reversible by changing diet and lifestyle, is also founder, president and director of the nonprofit Preventive Medicine Research Institute. He has published many books and academic papers and has received numerous awards in recognition of his work. He received a BA from the University of Texas and completed his medical training at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Harvard Medical School, and the Massachusetts General Hospital. He was a clinical fellow in medicine at the Harvard Medical School. Ornish was recognized by Life magazine as "one of the 50 most influential members of his generation." The White House Commission on Complementary and Alternative Medicine will provide a report, through the Secretary of Health and Human Services, to the President on legislative and administrative recommendations for assuring that public policy maximizes the benefits to Americans of complementary and alternative medicine.
