Young Scientists Win Career Development Awards Two UCSF scientists have received prestigious career development awards from the Burroughs Wellcome Fund. Immunologist Jody L. Baron, MD, PhD, and neuroscientist Samuel J. Pleasure, MD, PhD, were among 25 young US and Canadian scientists awarded a total of $12.5 million to boost their promising research careers and help them make the critical transition to becoming independent investigators. Career awards provide support ranging from $445,000 for four years to $574,000 for six years to bridge advanced postdoctoral training and the first three years of faculty service. Baron is investigating the role of the innate immune system in acute and chronic hepatitis B and a novel transgenic mouse model of primary hepatitis B virus infection. Pleasure studies the basic mechanisms of epilepsy and axonal reorganization that occurs in the dentate gyrus following different forms of hippocampal injury. "Unlike most programs offered by government and other private organizations, which typically provide a year or two of postdoctoral training or beginning faculty support, these longer-lasting awards are expected to provide the freedom and funding security that will enable investigators to develop innovative and independent research programs during a critical time in their careers," says Burroughs Wellcome Fund President Enriqueta C. Bond, PhD. Links: |
