Medical Center Named Among Best Hospitals

The UCSF Medical Center was named one of "America's Best Hospitals" in a ranking by US News & World Report. UCSF was No. 10 among 1,701 medical centers evaluated nationwide.

The annual ranking appears in the July 17 issue of the magazine, which appeared on newsstands today (July 10).

In rankings by specialties, UCSF was No. 5 in two categories: hormonal disorders, including diabetes and other glandular conditions: and in neurology and neurosurgery, including the treatment of strokes. It was eighth in digestive disorders.

UCSF ranked among the top 15 hospitals in the following specialties: heart (13); rheumatology (12); and urology (11).

Other rankings include: ear, nose and throat (16); geriatrics (28); kidney disease (19); and orthopedics (21).

Those rankings were based on a quality of care survey that took into consideration reputation, mortality and other factors, such as the number of Medicare patients discharged and the ratio of nurses to hospital beds.

In specialties evaluated on reputation alone, UCSF's rankings were: eyes (12); pediatrics (13); and psychiatry (11).

The top 15 hospitals in the US News hospital "Honor Roll" are: 1) Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore; 2) Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn.; 3) Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston; 4) Cleveland Clinic; 5) UCLA Medical Center; 6) Duke University Medical Center, Durham, N.C.; 7) Barnes-Jewish Hospital, St. Louis; Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston; and Stanford University Hospital - in a three-way tie; 10) UCSF Medical Center; 11) Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia; and University of Michigan Medical Center, Ann Arbor - in a tie; 13) University of Chicago Hospitals; 14) University of Washington Medical Center, Seattle; 15) University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.
