Top Award for Students’ Community Outreach

Three UCSF students were honored by Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Donna E. Shalala for promoting children’s health.

Medical students Curtis Chan and Phuong Khuu and dental student Ayman Metwally last week won the 18th Annual Secretary’s Award for Innovations in Health Promotion and Disease Prevention and $7,500 that goes with the first place prize.

They won for their project and paper "The Health Hut: A Traveling Festival of Children’s Activities Promoting Health Education and Facilitating Access for Health Care." The program involves a mobile health fair --the Health Hut -- that visits community centers, playgrounds and schools in low-income and medically underserved neighborhoods.

"These health professions students offer a promising future for health care," said Secretary Shalala. "Their strategies -- many targeted to children and women -- show creative ideas for helping communities improve health care through education, preventive services and access to health insurance."

The Health Hut promotes health education, offers medical and dental examinations for children and helps uninsured families apply for low-cost health insurance. To date, more than 7,000 children have visited 14 Health Hut events, and the UCSF students have up to 25 more upcoming events planned.

"This annual award allows us to showcase the creative work of today’s health professions students," said Claude Earl Fox, MD, Health Resources and Services Administration (HSRA) administrator, the HHS agency responsible for administering the awards program. "Their impressive solutions for improving health care and the quality of people’s lives give us confidence that tomorrow’s health care providers are ready to be challenged."

The Secretary’s Award recognizes forward-thinking proposals by health professions’ students for improving health promotion and disease prevention. The program is sponsored by HRSA’s Bureau of Health Professions in collaboration with the Federation of Associations of Schools of the Health Professions, and is coordinated by FASHP-member the American Association of Colleges of Nursing.

The competition generates creative strategies for addressing goals outlined in HHS’ Healthy People 2000. Proposals are judged on innovation, feasibility and potential impact on a community or target population.
