Faculty Honored for Oncology Nursing Care, Research Two professors in the School of Nursing were honored recently by the Oncology Nursing Society (ONS). Marylin J. Dodd, PhD, FAAN, UCSF associate dean of academic affairs in the School of Nursing and professor of physiological nursing, received the ONS/Chiron Excellence of Scholarship and Consistency of Contribution to the Oncology Nursing Literature. The award recognizes lifelong achievements and impact on care of patients with cancer. Dodds work is used by clinicians to help patients minimize symptoms and side-effects during treatment for cancer. She is the author of the much-used handbook on Suggestions to Manage the Side Effects of Chemotherapy and Radiation Therapy, 3rd edition, School of Nursing Press. Christine A. Miaskowski, PhD, FAAN, UCSF professor and chair of the department of physiological nursing, received the ONS/Bristol-Myers Squibb 2000 Distinguished Researcher Award. This award recognizes Miaskowskis lifetime achievements and significant contributions to oncology nursing research. She presented a paper entitled "Improving Pain Management: an Ongoing Journey" that summarized her program of research focused on documenting the effects of unrelieved pain and developing strategies to improve pain management. The awards were presented last week at the 25th anniversary congress of the ONS held in San Antonio, Texas. "These two nurses exemplify the important contributions that nurse scientists make in health care," said Kathleen Dracup, RN, DNS, FAAN, dean and professor, UCSF School of Nursing. "Their work has made a positive difference in the level of comfort cancer patients experience today." Links: Marylin J.
