School of Dentistry Names Alumnus of Year Ernest Newbrun, professor emeritus of the department of stomatology, has been named Distinguished Alumnus of the Year by the UCSF School of Dentistry. The award, to be presented as part of the School of Dentistry commencement ceremony on June 17, recognizes alumni who have made significant contributions to the betterment of society, the dental profession, and the School of Dentistry. Newbrun retired as professor of oral biology and periodontology in June 1994. He earned an MS in 1957 from the University of Rochester, a DMD in 1959 from the University of Alabama, a PhD in biochemistry from UCSF in 1965, and a certificate in periodontology from UCSF in 1983. After four years here as research trainee and postdoctoral fellow, Newbrun was appointed associate professor in residence of oral biology in 1965. His career has included many important contributions to dental education and research, among them his service as Chair of the Dentistry Section of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 1988-89 and as President of the International Association for Dental Research in 1989-90. Newbrun has been a major proponent of communal water fluoridation in the fight to reduce caries. His 1978 text, "Cariology," is now in its third edition and has been translated and published in Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, and Japanese. Newbrun has received numerous awards and honors, including honorary degrees from the University of Lund and the University of Sydney, a presidential citation from the American Dental Association, and the Research Award in Dental Caries from the International Association for Dental Research.
