Dentistry Assistant Dean Appointed to Legislative Fellowship Charles Alexander, assistant dean for student academic affairs, School of Dentistry: has been apointed by the American Association of Dental Schools as the 2000-01 Harry W. Bruce, Jr. Legislative Fellow. The fellowship is designed to familiarize dental educators with the federal legislative process as it relates to dental education. The fellow receives a stipend to cover travel and expenses for the three-month experience working as an AADS staff member in the Division of Government and Institutional Relations in Washington, DC. The residency experience coincides with the time when Congress is considering budget, authorization, appropriations, tax, and regulatory matters, such as Medicare, graduate medical education reimbursement and federal support for health professions training programs. Since coming to UCSF in 1996, Alexander has been responsible for admissions to the dental schools dental hygiene, pre- and postdoctoral programs; student academic support and retention services; and student outreach and recruitment. Alexander has been successful in securing funds from the California Endowment to start the only Dental Post-Baccalaureate Program in the nation. He also established a Health Sciences Enrichment Program designed to encourage high school students from disadvantaged and minority backgrounds to pursue health professions careers.
