Medical Center CEO Shares Thoughts from Visits to Departments In an email to UCSF Medical Center Staff, CEO Mark Laret commented on his visits with employees during Staff Appreciation Week and discussed issues that the Medical Center will need to focus on in the near future. "Over the next few weeks, I am looking forward to visiting those areas I wasn't able to get to last week," wrote Laret, who is beginning his third week at UCSF. "What impressed me most about my visits, however, is your commitment and enthusiasm for meeting the needs of our patients and their families and to making the necessary changes that will ensure UCSF Medical Center's long-term success. "I also heard frustration in many of your voices over systems that don't work well, continuing budget pressures, the loss of some excellent staff as a result of the de-merger and more," he said. "I believe that the best way to solve problems is to just jump in and start working on them. In many cases, you already know what needs to be done so I would encourage you to work with fellow employees and start solving those problems in your own areas." Laret noted that he has been working on many different short and long-term issues in the past two weeks. "Most urgent are addressing issues related to our budget, our staff, our operations, recruiting senior staff, planning for the growth of our children's services, starting a strategic planning process and working on legislative issues that I hope will lead to significant improvements in our hospital and outpatient care facilities," he wrote. "A final thought. I received some powerful advice from a seasoned health care executive many years ago and I still think of it often. It was simply this: Whenever you are confronted with a problem and you are not sure what to do, always do what is best for the patient. "I share this because no matter what your job is, you face decisions during the day about how to spend your time or what priority to attend to next. If we make what is best for our patients our highest priority, we are all going to move in the same positive direction. "For those of us who do not work directly with patients, our highest priority must be to help those who directly help patients." Links: |
