A Campus Chorus Line Scientists can sing, and some do it very well. A UCSF group the Vocal Chords -- will prove that in two weeks. The Vocal Chords is group of medical and dental students, post-docs, residents, staff and technicians, who are interested in sharing their love for music with the UCSF community. The singing scientists will perform their spring show on Wednesday, April 26, 6 p.m., in Toland Hall. The campus community is invited to the free performance, which is co-sponsored by Empact Presents!.
Besides traditional a capella and choral music, the Vocal Chords recently expanded performances to include costumes and staging for some of their pieces. An interpretation of "CATS" was performed at its UCSF winter concert in December. Adding theatrical elements to the concert is another way to communicate, explains Vocal Chords member and medical student Amy Poon. "We create another world with our costumes and choreography, and as an audience member, you get to step into this world and hear peoples stories," she says. "Theater is almost always about learning about people and understanding them. Our upcoming concert will take you from a woman living in Skid Row, to a boy and girl in love, to the days of the 50s, and finally to a woman in her 50s. Each person has something to share -- a story to tell." The April 26 spring show will feature a capella favorites, such as Billy Joels "Longest Time," "Lean on Me," "Over the Rainbow," and a musical version of a Robert Frost poem. Music and scenes will also be performed from "Evita," "Sunset Boulevard," and "Little Shop of Horrors." Guest artists include Rossitza Banova of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and a UCSF brass ensemble. Links: |
