UCSF AIDS Researcher Named to Presidents Council Cynthia Gomez, PhD, a member of the UCSF AIDS Research Institute and the Center for AIDS Prevention Studies, has been appointed to serve on the Presidential Advisory Council of HIV/AIDS. She was among 10 new appointees to the council announced this week by President Clinton. The Council, which was established by the Department of Health and Human Services in 1995, provides advice, information and recommendations regarding programs and policies to promote effective prevention of HIV disease, advance research on HIV and AIDS, and promote quality services to persons living with HIV disease and AIDS. Gomez, an assistant professor in the UCSF Department of Medicine, works on research projects geared primarily towards HIV/AIDS prevention interventions for diverse populations, including Latinos, women, the incarcerated, HIV-serodiscordant couples, gay men, and middle school children. She is the principal investigator of a new CDC-funded study called "Bay Men." The study, conducted by the UCSF Center for AIDS Prevention Studies (CAPS), focuses on decreasing isolation of HIV-positive men and engaging them in primary prevention of HIV. Gomez received her masters in counseling and consulting psychology from Harvard University and her PhD in clinical psychology from Boston University. Prior to coming to CAPS, She spent 12 years working in community mental health settings in Boston. Gomez also serves on the CDCs HIV & STD Advisory Council and the Scientific Advisory Committee and Board of Directors of the Alan Guttmacher Institute. Helen Miramontes, MSN, RN, FAAN, associate clinical professor of Community Health Systems in the UCSF School of Nursing and deputy director of the International Center for HIV/AIDS Research & Clinical Training in Nursing, was one of 16 members of the Presidential Advisory Council of HIV/AIDS reappointed for service. Miramontes has been working in the HIV/AIDS pandemic, both as a health professional and an activist, for 17 years with a particular emphasis on prevention, policy, and provider education.
