New Sculptures in Saunders Court

Four bronze sculptures by the late Robert Arneson were installed recently in Saunders Court as part of a program to put art in public places on campus.

The works, titled "Base for Easy Listening," "Column for a Toupee," "Head Stand for Naught," and "Pedestal for Self-Evaluation" playfully combine classical column forms and Arneson's self-portrait.

These works, from one of his last series, exemplify Arneson's wit and penchant for puns by usurping the function of the pedestal, placing the column on top of the head. Each piece is labeled at its base with the corresponding words: Base, Column, Head, and Pedestal, a direct reference to the reversed roles. While primarily recognized for his work in clay, Arneson created bronze sculptures throughout his career.

Intended by the artist to be exhibited together and preferably in a public setting, these four works constitute Arneson's first public installation in San Francisco. He had created a bust of the slain mayor, George Moscone, commissioned by the city in 1982 and subsequently rejected, according to Lynne Baer, campus art consultant.

The art is on loan to UCSF as part of the Chancellor's Committee on Arts, Honors, & Recognition’s "Masters of Contemporary Sculptures" showcase held in conjunction with the exhibition, "The Public and Private Worlds of Isamu Noguchi" now in the campus library (see Daybreak story).

Other sculptures by Charles Ginnever, Jack Zajac, and Viola Frey were installed recently in front of the Ambulatory Care Center, Langley Porter Psychiatric Institute and at Laurel Heights (see Daybreak story).
