Dr. DrakeMichael V. Drake, MD, senior associate dean for admissions and extramural academic programs in the UCSF School of Medicine, has been appointed University of California systemwide vice president for health affairs.

In his new role, Drake will oversee education at UC’s five academic medical centers -- UC Davis, UC Irvine, UCLA, UC San Diego and UCSF. The University is the largest single producer of trained physicians in the United States.

In addition to serving as senior associate dean, Drake is the Steven P. Shearing Professor of Ophthalmology at UCSF and vice chairman of the department of ophthalmology. At UCSF, his responsibilities included the

"Michael Drake is an outstanding clinician and administrator, and we are fortunate that he will bring those skills to bear on the increasing challenges that face medical education both in California and the nation," said UC President Richard C. Atkinson, who announced the appointment late last week.

Drake received his medical degree from UCSF in 1975 and his AB from Stanford University. He served his internship at Martin Luther King, Jr., General Hospital in Los Angeles and his residency at UCSF. He served as chief of the vision care and research unit at UCSF’s Beckman Vision Center.

Drake has received numerous national and campus honors during his time at UCSF. He was elected to the prestigious Institute of Medicine in 1998. In 1991, he received the campus’ Martin Luther King Jr. Award for his efforts to promote diversity.
