Medical Center Addresses Myriad Transition Issues Approaching the April 1 date to reintegrate the Medical Center with UCSF, employees who received job offers last month are reminded to return their response form to UCSF Human Resources no later than Monday, March 6. All new UC employees also are required to sign the State Oath of Allegiance Patent Policy and Patent Acknowledgment form prior to their first day of work. To comply with this University policy, employees must sign the form in front of a witness prior to Friday, March 10. For more information about the oath or job responses, call the Human Resources hotline number at 514-1100. Meanwhile, John Stone, interim chief operating officer (COO), updated faculty and staff on ongoing transition activities. "I know it has been a difficult two and a half years for all of us involved in the UCSF Stanford Health Care merger," Stone said in a recent email message. "As difficult as things seem today, there is no reason why we cant get our hospital back in order. I am confident that we can pull together and deal with the issues at hand. Communications, cooperation, hard work and a little patience is all we need." Appointed interim COO in August 1999, Stone, a senior vice president of the hospital consulting firm the Hunter Group, began last month giving UCSF faculty and managers weekly email updates that will continue over the next couple of months. Stone said the search for the chief executive officer is nearing completion and he is hopeful that an announcement will be made within the next 30 days. In the next couple of weeks, Medical Center employees will see paper signs with the UCSF Stanford Health Care name and logo replaced by permanent signs. Workers will begin making minor hospital repairs as needed, starting with the first floor. The first step to rebuilding the hospital is addressing many significant operational issues -- from complaints about linen quality to a lack of supplies on the units. Task forces have been formed to solve these issues, Stone said, adding that it will take time and teamwork. Stone meets weekly with Tim Mahaney, Jane Hirsch, director of nursing, Ted Schrock, chief medical officer, Bill Kerr, advisor to the Chancellor, and an interim materials management team to solve the supply and purchasing issues. Medical Center management continues to focus on financial issues and will begin budget planning for the fiscal year, which begins July l, Stone said. Managers should receive budget packets in March. In other news, UCSF plans to recruit an experienced childrens services executive to lead plans to develop a separate mothers' and children's services hospital at UCSF Medical Center. Sue Flanagan, who has been vice president for patient care of the combined UCSF Stanford children's services, has accepted a position with Lucile Packard Children's Hospital. Flanagan will provide transition support to UCSF through the end of March. In the interim, Jill Sullivan, who oversees children's patient care at UCSF, and Stone meet regularly to address short-term needs. In addition, the Mount Zion paycheck distribution office moved to the Human Resources office at 2233 Post St., Suite 303. Paychecks will no longer be sent to the Mount Zion security office. The office hours for the HR office are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Paychecks will be available for early pick-up after 2 p.m. on Thursday. The HR office phone number is 353-4643.
