Faculty to
be Honored by AAAS Three UCSF faculty
members will be among scientists honored as new fellows of the American
Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) at the organizations
annual meeting in Washington, DC this week. Michael P. Stryker,
PhD, professor and chair of physiology; Abraham M. Rudolph, MD, professor
emeritus of pediatrics; and Edward J. Goetzl, MD, professor of medicine
and microbiology and immunology were elected last fall to the AAAS.
Fellows are selected for "their efforts toward advancing science
or fostering applications that are deemed scientifically or socially
distinguished." Founded in 1848,
AAAS represents the worlds largest federation of scientists
and works to advance science for human well-being through its projects,
programs and publications. Stryker was honored
for "outstanding contributions in deciphering mechanisms of plasticity
in the mammalian nervous system and for academic leadership in neurosciences." Rudolph was elected
because of "distinguished contributions to the field of fetal
and neonatal cardiovascular physiology and hemodynamics of congenital
heart lesions before and after birth." Goetzl was honored
for "meritorius contributions to understanding of the roles of
lipid an neuropeptide mediators, and their cellular receptors, in
inflammation, immunity and growth." Links: American
