Problem Resolution Center to Train Potential Campus Mediators

The UCSF Problem Resolution Center (PRC) is now scheduling training for members of the campus interested in developing communication and mediation skills.

This will be a five-day training, to be held on February 24, 25 and 26 and March 3 and 4. The training is the second round offered by the PRC.

The Center does not know at this point whether those who attend the training will be called upon to serve as Problem Resolution Center mediators. This will depend on the future demand for PRC services and availability of those who have previously been trained.

Selection of 20 UCSF employees for training will be based upon the following criteria:

  • A commitment to a rigorous training consisting of 40 hours followed by several advanced sessions;
  • A willingness to serve as co-mediator (in a team mediation process) if requested to do so following the training program;
  • Agreement from one's supervisor to participate in training and follow-up activities with the Problem Resolution Center (in a separate memo with signature);
  • A demonstrated commitment to diversity through personal or professional activities/responsibilities;
  • Ability to listen and to serve in a neutral capacity;
  • A statement of certification (no more than one page) responding to the above criteria, including why you are interested in this opportunity and should be considered for it.

Training will be provided by Marvin Schwartz and Associates, which also conducted the first session.

The Campus Mediation Program is an alternative to existing procedures for hearing and resolving conflicts or disputes between individuals or groups. Neutral third-party mediators serve as facilitators. Mediators trained under this program will be subject to confidentiality requirements specified by law and practice, and will be trained to identify conflicts of interest (personal, professional or institutional).

Along with the one-page statement, please include your campus address and location, voicemail, and email addresses, and send it to the Problem Resolution Center, Box 1264, or email to (resolve@itsa.ucsf.edu), or fax to 502-9675 no later than February 17 (This is an extension of the previous deadline).

Questions can be addressed to Ellen Beilock, Mediation Officer (ebeilock@resolve.ucsf.edu) or 502-3272.
