Symphony Parnassus to Serenade Audiences at End of Month

Symphony Parnassus will perform the simple elegance of Dvorak’s serenades under the direction of conductor Stephen Paulson on Sunday, Jan. 30, at 2:30 p.m. at Calvary Presbyterian Church, 2515 Fillmore Street in San Francisco.

The orchestra will perform again on Monday, Jan. 31, at 8 p.m. at the Mt. Carmel Church, 3 Oakdale Avenue in downtown Mill Valley.

The concert programs will mix the tender and triumphant sounds of Dvorak’s Serenades for Woodwinds and for Strings and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7.

Tickets are priced at $10 for general admission and $5 for students with valid identification.

At a time of year when the daylight hours are short, the group will perform music "infused with lightness and youthful energy," said Paulson.

"Anyone who ever took a music appreciation class has heard Dvorak identified as one of the ‘nationalists,’ a term that conjures up images of militarism and chauvinism," Paulson says. "What a surprise these serenades are, with their earthy simplicity and disarming elegance, an expression of the deepest love Dvorak had for the Czech people. These works also present an opportunity to hear two great families of the orchestra, the strings and winds, each in its own world."

Paulson described the Beethoven symphony as "pure joy with boundless energy from beginning to end."

Continuing its 11th season, Symphony Parnassus, formerly the UCSF Orchestra, combines the talents of musicians from faculty, staff and students of UCSF as well as the Bay Area community.

A 22-year veteran as principal bassoonist of the San Francisco Symphony, Paulson began conducting in 1991 with the San Francisco Concerto Orchestra. From 1994 to 1996, he served as conductor of the Orchestra di Camera of the San Domenico School in Marin. He also conducted several performances with members of the San Francisco Symphony, including an orchestral program in 1997, which met with critical acclaim.
