Campus Commemorates Martin Luther King Jr.

Martin Luther King Jr.UCSF will celebrate the life of Martin Luther King Jr. with a series of events, Jan. 6 to 21.

The goal of the campus' annual Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration Week is to continue to heighten awareness in the UCSF community of Dr. King’s dream of respect and promotion of cultural and ethnic diversity of all people.

The following is the schedule of events organized by the MLK Commemoration Week Committee.

Thursday, January 6

Enjoy an exclusive UCSF evening at the California Academy of Sciences, 6 to 9 p.m., to view the featured exhibit, "Africa: One Continent. Many Worlds." The event is free for UCSF members and their families. For tickets, call Empact! Presents at 476-2675.

Wednesday, January 12

we march for...Brown Bag Lecture: "Perspective on New Civil Rights," 12:10 to 1 p.m., HSW 300. SF Supervisor Mabel Teng will discuss where we stand as a nation on civil rights.

Thursday, January 13

Cole Hall Cinema presents "Listen Up: The Lives of Quincy Jones," 5:45 and 8 p.m. Melding a collage of memories, musical songs and sounds, and intimate interviews with an extraordinary cast of Jones' collaborators, the film is a rousing showcase of popular music, a living history of black America, a revealing glimpse into the psyche of an artist and a modern story of inspiration. Admission: $2 to $3.50. The film will also be shown on Friday, January 14, 6:30 p.m. and 8:45 p.m.

Tuesday, January 18

The MLK Awards Ceremony, 12 to 2 p.m., Cole Hall. Chancellor Bishop invites the campus to honor three people chosen from the faculty, staff, and students who have furthered the goal of achieving ethnic diversity at UCSF. This year’s winners are Howard Pinderhughes, PhD, Ara Tahmassian, PhD, and Maria Lopez. See previous Daybreak story.

Thursday, January 20

Harold FreemanKeynote address. "Reflections on Poverty and Race in American Society," by Harold Freeman, MD, noon to 1 p.m., Cole Hall. Not even sickness and death are beyond the reach of racial inequality. Blacks are more likely than whites to suffer from dangerous conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure and kidney failure. In addition, poverty also plays an important role in this disparity. Freeman is president, CEO and Director of Surgery at North General Hospital in New York City. He is the chief architect of the American Cancer Society's initiative on cancer in the poor and is a leading authority on the interrelationship between race, poverty and cancer. Daybreak story.

Friday, January 21

"All of Us: Beyond Race and Gender," noon to 1:30 p.m., Cole Hall. A unique 30-minute comedy/drama created and presented by Orlando-Ward & Associates as a powerful tool to spark discussion about diversity. It was written in 1998 by award-winning playwright/producer/director Gregg Ward who received comprehensive input from a highly respected group of experts on diversity in the workplace.

All of UsAt times extremely funny, and at other times serious, but always realistically on point, this new play covers an extremely wide range of diversity issues including race, gender, education, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, work/family conflicts, generational issues, status, religion and personality. After the play, Gregg will lead the audience in a discussion about the issues presented in the performance and finally, there will be a session in which the audience will interact with the actors in character. Co-sponsored by the Center for Gender Equity and the Office of Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity/Diversity
